Dr. Mark Herceg Named Neuropsychology Concussion Consultant for PWHL New York Franchise

(New York, NY) – Dr. Mark Herceg has been selected to be the primary neuropsychology concussion consultant for PWHL New York franchise. Dr. Herceg is a neuropsychologist with extensive history in concussion management spanning 25 years and includes working with athletes at all levels, from youth to professional sports. Dr. Herceg will play a pivotal role in ensuring the health and safety of the New York PWHL athletes as they launch their inaugural season in 2024.

The New York PWHL franchise will play their home games in Bridgeport, CT and Queens, NY. Dr. Herceg will be part of the concussion team that will help evaluate and treat any player suspected of having a concussion. His wealth of experience and specialized knowledge in sports-related concussions will contribute greatly to the wellbeing of the players, allowing them to recover and perform at their peak while prioritizing their neurological health.

About Dr. Herceg: Dr. Mark Herceg is a neuropsychologist who specializes in brain injury, including sports related types. From 2015-17, he was the Commissioner of Mental Health for Westchester County, N.Y. During his tenure, he chaired a 28 member County Concussion Task Force that developed “10 Best Practices for Concussion Management.”

Dr. Herceg has helped shape concussion management practices and increase concussion education and awareness in Westchester County in both youth and high school sports since 2010. In 2015 he was awarded the Founders Aware by the Brain Injury Association of NY. In 2013 he authored a chapter on concussion management in the book “In the Arena” published by the NY State Bar Association. In 2016, he was one of 400 international experts invited to participate in the 5th International Consensus on Concussion Conference in Berlin. Dr. Herceg holds a faculty appointment at New York Medical College and the Zucker School of Medicine, Hofstra University. He is a Fellow of the Sports Neuropsychology Society and served on the Executive Board from 2016-20. He has been a concussion consultant to schools, youth sports, high school, collegiate and professional teams and athletes.

About the PWHL: The 2024 PWHL season is the first season of operation of the Professional Women’s Hockey League and began play on January 1, 2024. Six teams, comprising of some of the best female hockey players, will compete during the inaugural season. The teams are located in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, Ottawa, and Minneapolis–Saint Paul.
